About Harsharan Kaur

My Story

Harsharan Kaur is a well recognised Punjabi poetess. Born in Nabha, Punjab, she grew in the family that had strong commitments towards service to the nation and the state of Punjab. Her grandfather, Bhai Harnam Singh Gujarkhani ji was a freedom fighter who worked closely with Master Tara Singh, leader of Akali Dal. His selfless spirit to serve the community after partition of India, is a true example of a leader to get inspired from. He encouraged everyone to read about the Sikh History and about contribution of courageous Sikh women.Harsharan’s grandmother, Sardarni Veeranwali gave foundational support in the raising of the family.

She left deep impact of her virtues; of resilience, compassion, and service to others, on Harsharan. Harsharan’s father S.Indar Singh supported her interests in reading literature by best litterateurs. After her education in Nabha and Ludhiana Punjab, she got married to Mr. Ravindar Singh Somi and moved to Dehradun first and later to Delhi. Mr. Somi was a great lover of mountains and of books. He believed in spending a lot of time hiking on the slopes of the Himalayas with Harsharan. He was an ardent reader and had a close group of friends who were well known writers, Manmohan Singh Bawa, being one of them. She was fortunate to have met and spent time listening to Amrita Pritam, Malik Ram Sahib and Jaswant Singh Neki. Most of her married life was spent raising her family and being Head of Punjabi language Divinity, and Science subjects in prestigious High School (known as Senior Secondary School in India) in Delhi.

It was after, getting her sons married, and retirement, she had to face life’s biggest challenge of seeing losing of her husband, due to cancer. She was heartbroken and came to Canada with her younger son Dr. Rishi Singh, who is Ph.D in South Asian History from SOAS, University of London, MPhil from University of Delhi, M.A and B.A from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is well versed in Punjabi, Persian, Urdu and English literature.Dr. Rishi Singh, had lost a lot in life by loss of his father, and many material aspects of life, but he was determined to make her mother connect with the most beautiful gift she was blessed with-Punjabi poetry! Harsharan had taught Punjabi Literature in higher classes and as every student of her vouch for her that she explained poetry really well. She was Editor of School magazine, and often wrote articles, poems in the magazine. And soon, Harsharan, put all her pain into words and began writing her first book, Badalde Rang Kav Sangreh.

On the 2nd death anniversary of her husband she dedicated her first Punjabi Kav- Sangreh ‘Badalde Rang’ that was published in 2013 Michigan, USA to her husband. The forward of this book is written by Prof. Pashaura Singh of University of California who mentioned that her poetry revives classical style of poetry that disappeared from the canvas of Punjabi poetry. 51 poems in the book expresses her time spent together with her husband and the feelings of separation. In front of her inconsolable self, she experienced disrespect for relationships, selfish attitudes of close ones- through her poems in the book she expressed her emotions.
Harsharan’s second book Aabshaar, Kav- Sangreh got published in 2017 in Patiala. The forward of this book is written by Ravindar Ravi, award winning writer and founder of Paryogsheel Lehar in Punjabi Literature. This book puts in words poetess connection with bountiful nature besides lakes, gardens, rivers and oceans of Canada. In this book there are total fifty- six poems where she uses beautiful imagery of nature in her poems.
Another book, Kav- Sangreh, Jeevan- Pandh got published in 2017 in Patiala. The book has fifty-eight poems and its forward is written by well known poet Dr.Amarjeet Kaunke, winner of Sahitya Akademi award. The poems of this book associates with philosophical thoughts and happenings around with the self.

She humbly is grateful to the Almighty for blessing poetry upon her as it is through those few words she has healed and continues to connect her inner self with the outer world!
