My Story

HARSHARAN KAUR: AN INSTINCTIVE POETESS

Harsharan Kaur is a well recognised Punjabi poetess. Born in Nabha, Punjab, she grew in the family that had strong commitments towards service to the nation and the state of Punjab. Her grandfather, Bhai Harnam Singh Gujarkhani ji was a freedom fighter who worked closely with Master Tara Singh, leader of Akali Dal. His selfless spirit to serve the community after partition of India, is a true example of a leader to get inspired from. He encouraged everyone to read about the Sikh History and about contribution of courageous Sikh women.Harsharan’s grandmother, Sardarni Veeranwali gave foundational support in the raising of the family.

She left deep impact of her virtues; of resilience, compassion, and service to others, on Harsharan. Harsharan’s father S.Indar Singh supported her interests in reading literature by best litterateurs. After her education in Nabha and Ludhiana Punjab, she got married to Mr. Ravindar Singh Somi and moved to Dehradun first and later to Delhi. Mr. Somi was a great lover of mountains and of books. He believed in spending a lot of time hiking on the slopes of the Himalayas with Harsharan. He was an ardent reader and had a close group of friends who were well known writers, Manmohan Singh Bawa, being one of them. She was fortunate to have met and spent time listening to Amrita Pritam, Malik Ram Sahib and Jaswant Singh Neki. Most of her married life was spent raising her family and being Head of Punjabi language Divinity, and Science subjects in prestigious High School (known as Senior Secondary School in India) in Delhi.
